Top Benefits of Nitrous Sedation for a Stress-Free Dental Experience

NITROUS SEDATION CAN COMPLETELY CHANGE YOUR DENTAL EXPERIENCE! You DON'T have to dread going to see your dentist or hygienist! 33% of Americans NEVER go to the dentist out of fear of pain and anxiety, and as a result many end up with severely damaged or NO teeth at very young ages. Don't you want to have a beautiful smile and mouth full of teeth that help you chew your favorite foods? Lets walk through the simple process Dr. Appel and his team can provide you to completely change your dental experience and help you reach your goal of a beautiful smile!

What is Nitrous oxide sedation?

Nitrous oxide is a medical gas, also known as 'laughing gas', that has been safely in use since the mid 1800's. It is delivered to your lungs as you breath from a little nose mask. The nitrous oxide spreads through your body rapidly, making it effective for immediate anxiety relief during dental procedures.

What are the top 9 benefits of nitrous oxide sedation?

Patients receiving nitrous oxide during dental care can expect the following benefits:

  1. Reduces your anxiety and stress.

  2. Makes your appointments feel far shorter then they actually are. This is helpful for all types of appointments, but especially for lengthy dental procedures.

  3. Increases pain relief, especially important for patients with low pain tolerance.

  4. Decreases sensitive gag reflex

  5. Decreases how much you salivate

  6. Decreases your sensitivity to sound and vibration during dental treatment

  7. Decreases your jaw joint pain from having to stay open during dental treatment

  8. Protects your heart by decreasing blood pressure and providing higher oxygen levels to your body. This protects from angina, heart attacks, strokes, etc.

  9. Decreases your nervous muscle clenching, allowing a sense of calm and relaxation for body. Most patients will be so relaxed that you almost fall asleep during the dental appointment.

Is Nitrous oxide sedation safe?

Inhaled nitrous oxide has been used since the mid 1800's. With current protocols and delivery systems it is EXTREMELY safe and quickly modifiable for ideal patient comfort.

Nitrous is also commonly used as a precursor drug in most general anaesthesia cases in hospital operating rooms. So this is very commonly used throughout the healthcare system with great success!

How does nitrous oxide sedation effect my dental anxiety?

Our body has a built in sub-conscious "fight or flight" response that we cannot control. Any percieved threat, such as a dental care, can trigger this response, leading to the following effects:

  1. Increased heart rate and blood pressure

  2. Rapid breathing

  3. muscle tension

  4. Dilated pupils

  5. Heightened senses (such as perception of pain)

Sound familiar? Your body is preparing to fight or run because of something that scares your subconscious. It is very common for dentistry to stimulate this response because humans are very highly programmed to protect our face and head, the very location your dentist or hygienist is trying to work.

So how do we dramatically reduce or stop this response? Nitrous Oxide.

And even better, the effects improve with time. As you gain trust in the fact that Nitrous oxide CAN help you have a positive experience, you trigger the fight or flight response less and less, making it even easier for even lower levels of the Nitrous Oxide to provide you with a relaxing experience.

It is very common after a few years of use for patients to be so relaxed on their own that they don't even need the nitrous oxide anymore unless they desire it.

At the right levels, Nitrous oxide feels like you've had a nice 1/2 a glass of wine and can relax. And who doesn't like that?

Are you still in control of yourself while using Nitrous oxide?

Absolutely. Many people are concerned about losing control of their behavior while sedated.  While using Nitrous oxide at the appropriate level for dentistry, you are still conscious, aware of your surroundings and in complete control. You are also far more relaxed, far more comfortable and far less concerned about the entire process. Its a win-win combination!

How will it feel while using Nitrous dental sedation?

Patients can experience a wide range of positive sensations, but the following are most common:

  1. Slight tingling in the arms and legs

  2. Slightly euphoric / happy

  3. Relaxed heaviness, almost like using a weighted blanket

  4. Relaxation of muscles

  5. Slightly detached from process, reducing perception of stress and allowing to you think on other things during the dental procedure.

  6. Warm, floating sensation throughout the body
